Kendrick Lamar – Mirror

I’m writing this after my high from “Mirror” has long worn off, so my words will not feature the hyperbole that this deserves. Kendrick is a guy who can rap his ass off, but he really is a musician at his core, and his voice is his instrument. We mustn’t forget his production either.
“Mirror” is possibly the greatest image of self love, even more so than the body positive models who have made careers out of eating at the buffet, but still have attractive enough faces that dudes will simp on IG and congratulate them for the positivity they bring to this planet.
I have played this song far too many times at this point, but as I listen to it now while I write this, I know I will listen to this song throughout my life. I didn’t see any publications properly highlight this song, and it’s the album closer for Pete’s sake (Pete Davidson’s sake btw)! Danny Brown does the best album closers though, if we keepin’ it 100, which we must.
When the beat changes at 1:53 I actually get a bit upset as they strip away the part of the beat I love, but then they quickly bring it back, for the grand finale, which is a verse that ends the story of this fragment of his life, and the magnificent chorus you’ve already heard. Man, what a chorus, with those damn violins. Also, the lyrics here are classic Kendrick, personal, but also totally relatable, while also being insular.

About
The Author
I wrote this blog for a few reasons. One is because nobody in my circle of friends ever puts me on to music or things that are dope that I haven't heard about (step your game up friends!) as few people nerd out as hard as me on the dumb things I focus on. The other and main reason is because I am so tired of The NeedleDrop and Pitchfork, from the way Fantano talks about music, to the way that Pitchfork writes about it. Both cause me physical pain to read or watch, yet I for some reason occasionally check their review scores, because they are the only sites I know that do stay on top of music (to a degree), and they focus on genres that I'm not tapped into, so occasionally I find something good. Is it worth the pain? No. So let me save you the pain, by only sharing with you my favorites, and maybe you'll find a new favorite. Oh and I also love talking shit, so I'll do that too, but this blog is about showing love to great art.
