Apollo Brown – Flowers Die

Apollo Brown is a legendary producer from Detroit (my favorite hip-hop scene) who has been the rare beatmaker who can deliver quality and quantity. He’s churned out tons of albums with many of hip hop’s greats, as well as some of his friends who are more underground.

I used to be a huge stan back in the day, following his every move, but in 2015 or 2016 or so, I thought his style became somewhat formulaic, and I stopped paying as much attention as I previously had.

Fast forward to today, I did peep his Sincerely Detroit album, and wasn’t overly impressed. I saw that he dropped an instrumental album, which is something he rarely does, and decided to give it a spin.

To me, his sound has evolved a ton, as he isn’t using his signature drum pattern that had become redundant to me. “Flowers Die” was the track that really stood out to me, and I let him know in the IG comments quite a few times, then he made a music video for it. #CommentInfluencer. Anyways, this instrumental is perfection to me, I’ve played it way too many times. It gives me a Dilla vibe. The highest form of praise for a producer in the D.

I wrote this blog for a few reasons. One is because nobody in my circle of friends ever puts me on to music or things that are dope that I haven't heard about (step your game up friends!) as few people nerd out as hard as me on the dumb things I focus on. The other and main reason is because I am so tired of The NeedleDrop and Pitchfork, from the way Fantano talks about music, to the way that Pitchfork writes about it. Both cause me physical pain to read or watch, yet I for some reason occasionally check their review scores, because they are the only sites I know that do stay on top of music (to a degree), and they focus on genres that I'm not tapped into, so occasionally I find something good. Is it worth the pain? No. So let me save you the pain, by only sharing with you my favorites, and maybe you'll find a new favorite. Oh and I also love talking shit, so I'll do that too, but this blog is about showing love to great art.
